Las Olas Surfing for Women
Las Olas

Hello from Sunny Mexico!

This guide was created to support women in navigating the aftermath of the November 2024 election. Many of these pointers are timeless and can be revisited whenever we face challenging times, offering tools and insights to help  sail through any stormy seas. Like any surfer girl knows, we just keep paddling!

Take Time

Take the time to grieve and feel every emotion you’re entitled to. Then when you’re ready, remember how strong you are, and if you’re not feeling strong yet, lean on someone who is.

Don’t Try Too Hard to Change Someone’s Mind

Trying to change someone’s mind can feel like arguing with a wall. Conversations don’t always need winners. If both sides can agree to disagree, that’s golden. And if not, well, you tried. Put on your best Mona Lisa smile, sip your coffee (or tea), and remember that peace of mind is often better than “winning.”

If They Say Something Out of Line, Ask Them to Repeat It

If someone throws a jab at your opinion, simply say, “Could you repeat that?” This move makes people stumble and rethink their words. It’s the polite version of holding up a mirror—they might think twice before talking smack again.

Take a Solo Adventure

Step away from the noise. A little alone time works wonders, whether it’s a long walk, a solo coffee date, or organizing your closet or surfboard quiver. It gives you space to decompress, recharge, or even script those “what I should have said” retorts for next time.

Channel Your Energy Productively

There’s something magical about a little frustration paired with an action plan. Paint, write, bake, dance—do whatever makes you feel creative or productive. Post-election energy can fuel new ideas; just remember to channel it positively.

Find Your ‘Rant’ Friend

You know that friend who “gets it”? The one you can text, “Can you believe…!” and they reply with a paragraph of validation? That’s your person. Venting is an art when done with the right person. Bonus points if your friend adds emojis and GIFs to keep things on the lighter side.

Be Curious

Think like a journalist. Be the girl unafraid to ask the hard questions. What would Katie Couric ask? Unfairness and inequities are often revealed by one person willing to speak up and bring others along. Seek out what might hinder humanity’s progress and shine a light on it – because change begins with the courage to question.

Get Outside!

Nature is a cure-all. Whether it’s surfing, walking, or just sitting outside, spend time in the natural world. It grounds you, clears your mind, and reminds you of the bigger universe beyond the four walls.

Go Easy on the Cocktails

A cocktail might help in the moment, but go easy. Alcohol can amplify emotions, fuel arguments, and lead to headaches the next day. We need our mental clarity now more than ever!

Spoil Yourself

With the holidays around the corner, it’s the perfect time to treat yourself! Book a spa day, plan a mini-vacation, or organize a girls’ trip. A little pampering never hurt anyone, and it gives you something to look forward to.

Laugh It Off

At the end of the day, laughter is the best medicine. Watch a silly show, read memes, or trade funny stories with friends. A little humor goes a long way in lightening the load. Besides, a good laugh is good for you—so it’s basically self-care.

How Can We Help?

Consider supporting initiatives that address essential needs, such as affordable housing, reducing grocery prices, or combating drug trafficking or women’s rights? Identify organizations in your community leading these efforts, and explore ways to get involved—whether through volunteering, donating, or raising awareness.

Keep Perspective

Remember, everything comes in cycles. Ups and downs are part of life. Tomorrow’s sunrise is a fresh start, and, in the grand scheme, the world keeps turning. So take a breath and remind yourself that perspective is key.

I hope you found this helpful. Like the baby turtles, we won’t stop paddling.

See you in the waves,
Bev
