I have coaching experience, but I’m always on a mission to understand what makes a truly great surfcoach. I asked some Las Olas guests and sister surfcoaches their advice and highlighted their responses below.

“A great surfcoach listens to your needs, makes you feel comfortable, and knows you’re more capable than you think!”

“A great surfcoach knows the ocean conditions, has the patience to meet students where they’re at, and has a passion for the sport.”

“A good surfcoach allows plenty of time for guests to process information. In other words, there’s no need to rush it.”

“A good surfcoach has an almost psychic ability to know your exact level of comfort and push you out of it just enough so that you can improve.”

“A good surfcoach has the empathy to understand how each person learns and adapts teaching skills so everybody can learn to surf.”

 “A good surfcoach has excellent knowledge about the currents, waves, and swells, all while having fun with her students out in the water.”

 “A good surfcoach is empathetic, passionate, fun, and doesn’t take themselves too seriously.”

“Someone who motivates confidence by taking a genuine interest in surfing development through understanding personal goals and providing supportive feedback.”

 “A good surfcoach remembers what it was like to learn to surf and holds space for a wide array of emotions.”

“A good surfcoach is patient, non-judgmental, open, kind, a good communicator, sociable, generous with their knowledge, and stoked!”

This is a short list of qualities for a great surfcoach, but I already see a theme!
